My friend Brittany (A Foodie on a Mission) and I worked on this recipe together and love the way it turned out! Be sure to read the end to learn more about the science behind sunscreen, the ingredients chosen for this recipe (and why) and a few other important facts!
- Measuring Cups
- 40 drops of Carrot Seed Oil (not Carrot Base Oil)
- 1/4 Cup of Avocado Oil
- 1/2 Cup of Coconut Oil (Room Temperature)
- 1/4 Cup of Red Raspberry Seed Oil
- Fragrant Essential Oil (to your liking)
- No Citric Essential Oils as they increase sun sensitivity
- Add all your ingredients into a bowl and mix with a spoon
- Place in your freezer for 15 minutes to chill
- Remove from your freezer
- Use your mixer to thicken/emulsify your mixture. The consistency should be similar to that of a Body Butter.
Below are the estimated SPF’s for each ingredient:
- Carrot Seed Oil: SPF 35
- Red Raspberry Seed Oil: SPF 30
- Coconut Oil: SPF 8
- Avocado Oil: SPF 10
- Jojoba, Shea and Almond Oils have a similar SPF, if you’d like to substitute

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Did you also know that most people are Vitamin D deficient? I feel like there’s such emphasis on protecting yourself from the sun but not enough emphasis on proper exposure to the sun in order to supplement our deficiencies. Vitamin D deficiencies are linked to so many health issues, including decreasing your body’s ability to absorb calcium! This can mean you risk having weak and brittle bones.
You can get Vitamin D from your diet, through your skin and/or through supplements. If you choose the skin route then you’ll definitely want a moderate amount of sun exposure! Of course, you wouldn’t want to burn your skin so having a good SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is key! You want one that will still allow sun rays to reach your skin but not enough to damage your skin.
According to EWG, the federal law that was designed to ensure that personal care products are safe has remained unchanged since 1938. How crazy is that?! That’s actually scary considering most sunscreens contain harsh chemicals! Have you heard of “swimmer’s wash-off”? It’s exactly what it sounds like – the stuff that washes off of swimmers. That’s us! (Well, maybe not me. I’m not a great swimmer lol). When we wear chemical sunscreens and jump in the water, it eventually affects oceans and algae health. Sure, our individual impact may not seem like a big deal but when you have millions of people swimming in certain areas, year after year, the negative effects add up quickly!
Something to keep in mind with this DIY Sunscreen recipe is that it’s not waterproof. You’ll want to reapply it after getting wet/sweating for extended periods of time. If you want to make it more water resistant, consider adding Beeswax.
I suggest storing your homemade sunscreen in a dark/amber bottle or jar. Sometimes when essential oils are exposed to light for too long they oxidize and so their SPF decreases a little. I’m talking months of light exposure! Lastly, be sure to store it in your refrigerator!
